Bengaluru: India's Mars Orbiter Mission is slated to be launched on October 28 after a national committee of experts gave the go ahead for the Rs 450 crore ambitious venture after threadbare deliberations.

The committee held deliberations over two days on Thursday and Friday last and reviewed the status after senior Indian Space Research Organisation scientists gave an in-depth presentation on the mission.

Primary objectives of the mission are to demonstrate India's technological capability to send a satellite to orbit around Mars and conduct meaningful experiments such as looking for signs of life, take pictures of the red planet and study Martian environment.

"The committee has given the go ahead", an ISRO official told the media here on Sunday.

Former ISRO Chairman U.R. Rao, noted space expert Roddam Narasimha and Professors of Indian Institute of Science Bangalore were among those part of the eminent panel.

The October 21-November 19 launch window has now been pushed forward by a week, and it now starts on October 28 though final date of the window remains the same (Nov19).

"We would like to utilise the first available opportunity", the official said, adding, the launch can be expected on the afternoon of October 28, weather permitting. The Rs 150-crore Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) spacecraft is currently underoing vibration and acoustic tests at ISRO Satellite Integration and Testing Establishment here, and is slated for shipment from here on September 30 to the Sriharikota spaceport after a pre-shipment committee review on September 26. Launch campaign has already commenced in Sriharikota spaceport from where the 1,350-kg MOM spacecraft is slated to be launched by the Rs 110 crore Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C25).

The first stage of the PSLV-C25 with strap-ons has already been assembled, with the rocket ready for satellite integration by October ten.

Bravo and Kudos to our great scientists. Nonetheless we have to be careful about sabotage from Chinese and specifically the STUXNET virus that was planted by the them.

STUXNET was / is an American - Israeli joint venture. Stay abreast of the revelations by Edward Snowden. The Chinese spy a lot but STUXNET is not Chinese.

Although the Idea for MARS mission is nice, it derives many theories come true and proves good for better tomorrow. But, on the other hand, at present as we are aware of the prices of fuels increasing day by day and Indian currency is weaving around 58-60 Rupees a Dollar. In such crisis, India should think twice before investing such a huge amount in one damn mission which costs 450 Crores. Indian Market is fast growing market no how, but also Indian Govt. should not forget that the Unemployement rate in India is very high too. After such decision what should be the impact on Indian future. Now the time has come, India should think in multiple directions first. NASA is making good as US is a developed country, India is still a developing country & India can't do what all NASA is achieving in daily life. We can't compete everyone in one go, take a rest - think- act smartly. MARS Mission should be halted for a moment. EXPERT ADVISE.

If we don't run programme like this then other countries will have edge on us. Your thinking is totally wrong that we should not invest our money in this programme. ISRO is earning it's own money from other countries as it cheaply sets satellite on the space with it's homegrown technology PSLV. So, we should discover more possibilities. Thereby, it is good move by ISRO to show our knowledge and technological prowess to whole world.

oh pls.....this is a leap for india and the scientists who work so hard. Do you stop eating when the prices of vegetables and other products go high??? i hope you dont. This is one of the best mission we are conducting and it should go on.

if you are concerned about 450Cr, investigate and go after any reported scam and you can get the money back. You are ignoring 200000Cr scams and going to stop science spend of 450Cr ?

I hope this mission is a success. This can prove to be a potential foreign revenue generation alternative, and a big one really. A successful mission will only strengthen our reputation and we will get more business in terms of carrying foreign payloads or launching foreign satellites.

Can anyone tell me why such missions are required for us?? specially in our country where Govt. need to bring Food Security Bill for poor people???? FYI, Total cost of this mission reported by media is presently more than Rs. 500 crores, and no one knows at the end it may grow into Rs. 1,000 or 2,000 crores in background (may be even more, considering CWG scam where cost grown from 600 crores to 70,000 crores) Do you expect that through this mission we will know more than NASA? It is simply throwing our hard earned money into space, which is charged from us by Govt. through various Taxes. For what? just for displaying in next General Election that Govt. has thrown our hard earned money into space?

That's absolutely right. No one wants to have the clear picture of what the Indian Govt. is wasting on, There should be proper utilisation of Indian Money. All must understand this is not which is worthy at this time when we are in debt. Scams are going on, not only CWG, but also Chopper Scam and various others, etc. We are not blaming any organisation that they are putting efforts in bringing economic structure in streamlined sequence. But Govt. should not neglect the tasks at priority. MARS exploration is not my concern, although nice idea for researchers. If Govt. continue spending such a huge amount on such damn fockin missions, I must say the Indian currency will cross Rs 100 per Dollar in no time. If we are setting money from foreign satellites placement in different orbits through Sriharikota Space Centre, and we are saving money from it. We should invest that money in India's development not in explorations. Lacking UNITY!!

This mission is a very good news for the country. This is not only a show of technological prowess but a step forward for future space adventures. No doubt there are so many problems the country is facing but we have to solve those problems and go forward in technological advancements. It is a pride for all Indians.

The reason talented Indian's move abroad, why we import so much stuff, why we are able to export so little, why we are unable to exploit our own natural resources to serve our population, why NSA is able to conduct surveillance on us like we are some third world country... one word "TECHNOLOGY". Technology doesn't happen in one day.. you think 20-30 years ahead and allocate resources for it. Some of the best consumer technologies come from Space research and allied activities because they generally involve Pushing the Technology.. So ISRO go for it and be even more ambitious..

I think that investing this much amount in such a great mission which can help India in many ways is not a wrong step. Although we should not forget that the amount of money India has lost in past 10 years due to the acts of corruption is way more than the amount which is invested on this project so If you are worried about unemployment , falling value of rupee etc. then take your time to find a way to stop ''CORRUPTION'' instead of criticizing missions like this .

Another example of lopsided development, inequality of distribution of so called “prosperity of the country” among different economic classes of people ,for achievement of which people have been driven tirelessly to the extent of exploitation with no heed to repeated representation, upstartism manifested from some form of depseated inferiority complex, utter imbalance of priorities, excessive inflated obsession in some classes in the country, claiming titles like “future big power” to show off despite harrowing conditions of large part of people,at the expense of people quintessentially significant despite keeping truth about them in ultra secrecy for country’s /nations’ continued existence, hypocrisy ,total flouting of principles of Father of the country etc-these on the negative sides. Soaring heights much more evolved from outdated hot-air-balloons sneezed at by the planners of development of the country, never imaginable for people kept at ultra- nadir, thus breaking all records in the history of humanity, in the matter of distance between the two. Quite in keeping with the epics and myths boasted nationally as show off, forgetting their spirits, but trying to kill them in reality: A further step towards D Day in keeping with the final Act. Hypocrisy.-----on the positive side.
