Bengaluru: After scaling a 30-foot wall to break free from Parappana Agrahara central prison, serial rapist and killer Jaishankar, who was rearrested by police on Friday, admitted after a thorough grilling that he was helped by someone inside the prison.
In his voluntary statement to the police, Jaishankar said that he paid a newly appointed jail warder Rs 1,000 in order to make a duplicate key that would help him unlock his cell. The warder has reportedly been identified and will be arrested.
Official sources claimed that Jaishankar had not been sticking to one story; instead he was changing his version, regarding his whereabouts after escape, during interrogation. “He first said he was at a school, then at a house, and finally he said he had taken refuge at an abandoned shed all alone,“ said a source.
“After jumping the wall, a grievously injured Jaishankar limped all the way to Kudlu Lake where he came across a deserted shed and collapsed there, unable to move forward.
He survived the first few days by drinking water from the lake at night and walking around to get food parcelled. It is still not clear how he had any money with him.“
However, when the pain became unbearable, he resorted to sending some boys to buy buns from a petty store next to Sadguru Sainath School nearby . “Now that he has been remanded to police custody for ten days, he will be subjected to more intense questioning.
This will reveal the names of others, if any, at the prison who helped him in his getaway,“ the source added.
“The fact that he was found clean shaven has roused the suspicions of senior officials, who are not entirely ready to believe that he lived in an unused fisherman's shed for six days. He is being given treatment for his injured knees, ankles, and back,“ the source said.
