The buzz in sports circles these days is that hard-hitting batsman Dinesh Karthik is seeing squash pin up girl Dipika Pallikal. And what’s more, the two have been an item for close to a year and our sources say that they are about to take their relationship a step further.

While cricketer-movie star relationships are a dime a dozen, there are very few hard-core “sports” couples like Sania Mirza-Shoaib Malik.

We hear that for Dinesh and Dipika, cupid struck at a gym in Chennai. “It was not love at first sight. They began with exchanging pleasantries and became friends before their hearts united. Both train under the same fitness expert who incidentally also coaches an IPL team,” said a source close to Dipika.

In February this year Dinesh apparently travelled all the way to the UK where Dipika was training, to surprise her. And during India’s victorious Champion’s Trophy campaign in London, the two were often spotted spending quality time together.

It was after this that the couple got a stamp of approval from their respective parents.

Our source tells us that Dinesh considers Dipika his lucky charm since the cricketer made his way back into the Indian team earlier this year and has been performing quite well. “She has been a pillar of support and motivates him to excel. Dinesh, too, is serious about Dipika’s squash career. They train together at the gym whenever they are in Chennai. But one thing is clear — they are not going to sacrifice their careers for the sake of the relationship,” the source added.

Representing the Mumbai Indians, Dinesh was a revelation during the 2013 Indian Premier League and went on to regain his place in the Indian team during the Champions Trophy. He was also part of the squad that won the bilateral series in the West Indies and Zimbabwe and his dream run continued in South Africa where he scored a brilliant half-century, leading India to title triumph in the tri-series. In September, current World No. 15 and Arjuna awardee Dipika will return to the squash circuit and Dinesh, who will get a well-deserved break after a long time, is set to accompany her to Malaysia.
