Bengaluru: A 38-year-old construction worker was killed on the spot after the frame of a metal staircase fell on him at Metro construction site in Peenya police limits on Sunday afternoon. The deceased is Govindaraj, a native of Ambur in Tamil Nadu.
Govindaraj was standing next to a crane (Hydra) shifting the metal frame when the crane toppled suddenly and the frame fell on Govindaraj killing him on the spot.
According to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL), Govindraj was working as a supervisor with M/S Venkateshwara Engineering.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the accident occurred due to toppling of the Hydra and the main frame falling on the supervisor who was supervising the shifting work and crushing him to death. This is further being investigated, said a release issued by Chief Public Relation Officer, BMRCL.
The accident took place close to the Peenya police station junction on National Highway 4, police said. Govindaraj is survived by his wife and two children. His son had also been living with him in Peenya's S.R.S (Sharavathi Receiving Station) Colony; and his wife and other child were back in Ambur.
The body was sent for an autopsy and a case has been registered against the contractor and owner of the construction agency.
The contractor has contacted the family and taken all steps to complete the necessary formalities and provide benefits to the next of kin, BMRCL said in a statement.
