A day before trial, rape victim’s tongue cut off

Lucknow: In a shocking incident, the tongue of a minor gang-rape victim was chopped off in Pratapgarh district, late on Wednesday night.
The girl has been admitted to a hospital and her condition is said to be serious. Doctors say she may have to live with speech impairment all her life.
According to reports, the minor girl had been gang-raped on January 22 and was scheduled to give her statement before the court on July 24.
The main accused is in jail but the other two accused are on the run. The girl’s family had lodged a complaint with the police stating that they were being pressurised to withdraw their complaint against the accused.
They said that Lalji, the brother of the main accused, had attacked the girl with a sickle to prevent her from giving her statement in court. There were three other accomplices in the crime.
The police said that a manhunt for the main accused had been launched while one of the co-accused Indel had been arrested.
