Hyderabad: The National Legal Services Authority has requested the Supreme Court to add transgenders as a third category for providing facilities like identity cards, admission in educational institutes, voter cards and employment, entitling them to facilities extended to citizens. Also, separate wards in hospitals have been recommended.

Speaking at a seminar on  Strengthening Legal Aid and Education for Marginalised Communities and Those Most At Risk Of HIV/AIDS, SC judge Justice P. Sathasivam said that even drug addicts, sex workers, MSMs and transgenders have the right to equality, protection against discrimination, right to privacy and personal dignity, protection against trafficking, and right to livelihood.

Justice Sathasivam recommended that the Lok Adalats be made accessible when these marginalised communities are arrested and reach out to the police stations to provide legal aid to them.

“As a result of societal stigma, the sex workers, homosexuals and transgenders are not considered human beings and thus get devoid of' all human rights. We must remember that their well-being suffers greatly by the attitudes of intolerance and hatred directed on them than their socio-economic status,” he said.

AP High Court Chief Justice Kalyan Jyothi Sengupta said these communities are denied the right to live with dignity, and are harassed by middlemen and police. They are not even allowed cremation as they are ostracised by the society, he said.
