Chennai: Blue Cross members nabbed a poacher who was hunting migratory birds in Iyambakkam lake, near Ambattur. According to locals, hunting becomes rampant during breeding season of these birds.
Almost 37 dead carcasses of the coots were recovered from the poacher. The volunteers of Blue Cross reached the spot at 8.am in the morning and found as many as ten poachers hunting.
The Blue Cross volunteers claim that after seeing the activists, the poachers fled the spot leaving behind a sack full of killed birds. The volunteers say that the poachers managed to escape with another sack.
“There were two bags and only one was recovered and another sack was taken away by the poachers while fleeing; there may be at least 50 more birds that could have been killed. One gypsy was handed over to the police,” said Dawn Williams, general manager, Blue Cross.
“We have booked them under arms act as they do not have necessary details and license for their weapons,” said a police official.
The forest rangers booked the gypsy for illegally killing the scheduled bird, protected under the wildlife protection act. “Special team has been formed to nab the rest of the members who fled the spot,” said a forest official.
