Kochi: Lane traffic system is to be implemented strictly across the state. Heavy  vehicles like buses and lorries should keep left while cars and other speeding vehicles are to take the right lane, according to Transport Commissioner Rishiraj Singh.

Flagging off a bullet rally here on Monday  as part of the official launch of the one-month awareness campaign to make the system working, he said, “during one month, pamphlets will be distributed to motorists. After that lane traffic will be strictly enforced. Defaulters will face penal action, mostly fine.”

Earlier in January 2011, the state government had implemented the lane traffic system on an experimental basis along the 16-km stretch between Edapally and Aroor on  the NH 47 bypass.
However, the measure was a failure as motorists hardly followed it.
