Kochi: The apparent relation of diabetes to increasing number of cancer cases across the world became the subject of a brain-storming session of the fifth World Congress on Diabetes which concluded here on Sunday.

Panelists Dr Shaukat Sadikot, the president elect of International Diabetes Federation, Dr Martin Buysschaert from Belgium, Dr Balagopal P.G. from RCC, Thiruvananthapuram, Dr Jothydev Kesavadev from Thiruvananthapuram and Dr Marja Rita Taskinen from Finland debated the issue at a session co-ordinated by Dr Sudha Vidyasagar (Manipal).

The panelists opined that till date the use of diabetes medicines has not generally been cited as a reason for cancer. The lone case reported is the ‘pioglitazone’ that has been banned for causing urinary bladder cancer, it was pointed out.

It is time more focus is given to the issue of relation between cancer and diabetes, it was felt. High doses of insulin in patients in the later stages of diabetes can be a reason for cancer, some of the experts felt.

Often this happens because the patients in early years after diabetes diagnosis do not follow the strict therapy protocols which force them to use high doses of insulin at a later stage.

Another major session was devoted to the subject of sexual dysfunction in diabetes patients presented by Dr Deepak Jumani (Mumbai) More than 3000 expert medical practitioners, scientists and researchers from across the world formulated a series of decisive action plans to reverse the diabetes mortality clock in the four-day congress organised by DiabetesIndia.
