Kochi: People from various walks of life including hundreds of women took a pledge and danced their heart out at the Durbar Hall grounds here on Thursday evening as part of the global movement, ‘One Billion Rising’ to protest the rising atrocities against women.
Kochi was one of the centres across 197 countries where the novel protest, initiated by playwright and activist Eve Ensler, was simultaneously held. Singer Usha Uthup and former Kerala High Court Chief Justice Usha Sukumaran led the movement with the theme ‘Strike, Dance and Rise’.
It all began with a rally from Rajendra Maidan to the Durbar Hall ground, where an installation by artist Sajitha Shankar was showcased. Former supreme court judge Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, who presided over the function, joined hundreds in taking an oath to make the world a safer place for women.
“Men should play a vital role in supporting their wives, mothers and daughters”, Justice Krishna Iyer said.
Soon the stage was set afire with Usha Uthup rendering ‘Ente Kerala Etram Sundaram….’ and following it up with ‘Bindiya Chamkegi….’ with the audience shaking their legs.
