Chennai: Protest against the arrival of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa by members of Periyar Dravida Kazhagam and Nam Tamizhar Katchi turned violent on Thursday when they attacked the Ceylon Bank in Egmore, leaving two employees of the bank injured.

The injured employees were identified as Maria Rajesh, 26, from Kodungaiyur and Janakan, 21, a Sri Lankan Tamil residing in K.K. Nagar.

The incident took place at around 2 pm on Thursday when around a dozen people arrived at the bank situated on Casa Major Road. “They pushed down a policemen standing in front of the bank and pelted stones. They also tried to enter and two employees suffered injuries,” the police disclosed.

“We have identified the attackers from the video footage taken during the violence. We are hopeful of securing them by the night,” said a senior police official.
