Thiruvananthapuram: Rumours are once more rife of a possible cabinet reshuffle.
The main intention of the 'A' group is to bring KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala into the UDF cabinet and take control of the party by appointing Speaker G. Karthikeyan in his place. But leaders close to Chennithala said that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was not keen to give the Home portfolio to the former. A final decision on the reshuffle is likely only after the budget session of the Assembly.
After a brief lull, political circles are agog with talks of an imminent reshuffle with a lot of formulae being worked out. One major formula is to bring in either V.D. Satheeshan or K.C.Joseph or Aryadan Mohammed as the Speaker.
Chennithala is likely to be offered either the post of Deputy Chief Minister or a minister. If it is the former post, he is likely to get the Cooperation and Devaswom portfolios and if it is the latter, it would be Revenue alone.
Health Minister V. S. Sivakumar might face the axe but the decision is subject to the NSS stand. With the Chintan Shibir in Jaipur stating that PCC chiefs can have two terms of three years each, it’s been revealed that Chennithala’s tenure has stretched to over seven-and-a-half years now.
“It was the AICC which recently came out with the much awaited revamping with Chennithala under its helm. Discussions are on in the inner coterie, but Chandy, of late, has been dilly dallying on this issue”, said a leader who is close to the Chennithala camp.
And if the high command pressurizes Chandy to give Chennithala the Home portfolio, it will be taken from Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan and he will be given back Revenue. Party sources said that Chandy had talked to Muslim League’s Hyderali Shihab Thangal to return the Education portfolio which they had initially declined. However, the chances of Chennithala becoming AICC general secretary also cannot be ruled out as it is expected to be revamped soon.
