If industry sources are to be believed, in a dramatic turns of events, the release of Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus ‘Viswaroopam’, in the news for the actor’s revolutionary idea of releasing it first on DTH before being released on January 11, has been postponed to January 25.
And the biggest disappointment for the fans of Ulaganayagan is that the DTH release a day prior to the release, January 10, is put off as per sources.
Despite stiff opposition from theatre-owners and distributors of Tamil Nadu, Kamal signed the deal with DTH service providers. The theatre associations threatened not to screen ‘Viswaroopam’ and also said they would not cooperate in future with those who release their films on DTH platform.
Still, about 40 theatres in Tirupur and few in Chennai, including Devi, Sathyam Cinemas and Inox, came forward to release the film.
The Los Angeles premiere has also been cancelled. Source close to Kamal had a meeting with theatre-owners and distributors Monday night and decided that ‘Viswaroopam’ will not get released on January 11. It might be postponed to January 25 and the DTH release will happen on the same night. Kamal is said to be holding several rounds of talks on Tuesday also, and a clear picture will emerge once an official announcement is made.
DTH operator Videocon has already started beaming news that since ‘Viswaroopam’ release has been postponed, they are putting off their airing of the film.
