Vijay wants son in Davis Cup team

DC | C. Santhosh Kumar | 02nd Jan 2013

Chennai: Prakash Amritraj had been an integral part of the Indian Davis Cup team until a sports ministry’s policy, in December 2008, got him thrown out of the squad.

The rule that said only Indian citizens were allowed to represent the country disqualified tennis legend Vijay Amritraj’s son who holds an American passport.

Now that Prakash has made an impressive comeback to the ATP Tour, Vijay says he would like to see his son representing the country again. Vijay is planning to talk to the All India Tennis Association.

“I will have a word with Aita president Anil Khanna soon to get more clarity about the rule.

Things could have changed since that sports minister (M.S. Gill) left the office.

Prakash is playing well now and if Aita asks him to play, he’s ready for it,” Vijay told this newspaper.

The Aita selection committee is meeting at the end of Chennai Open to pick the squad for the Asia-Oceania tie against South Korea and Prakash’s name is likely to be discussed.

Prakash is one of the only two Indians to make it to the second round after playing three matches in qualifiers, while Yuki Bhambri was eliminated in the opener and others didn’t even qualify. “It’s a perfect yardstick to decide.

He’s in form and good enough to play,” Vijay added.

Prakash last played against Romania in September 2008.
