Pune: Israel’s Karen Shlomo and Turkey’s Basak Eraydin shocked seeded players to advance to the round of 16 at the $25000 NECC ITF Women’s tennis tournament being organised and hosted by Deccan Gymkhana on Tuesday.
Shlomo made the biggest upset of the tournament by knocking out an completely off-colour second seed Aleksandra Krunic 6-2, 6-3. Krunic, who arrived in city late on Monday, just didn’t find her rhythm, and kept missing simple shots, losing a completely one-sided match in exactly one hour.
Eraydin, born to parents who are both tennis coaches, won the best match of the day, beating Switzerland’s fifth seed Conny Perrin 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. The Turkey girl, who is playing in Pune for the first time, raised her game considerably in an already high quality match, breaking Perrin’s serve twice to make it to the pre-quarters. Eraydin, who started playing tennis at 2-and-half years, won the match in 112 minutes.
There was disappointment for local crowd at Pune girl Rutuja Bhosale was totally outplayed by Thailand’s sixth seed Noppwan Lertcheewakaran. The Thai girl lost just two games, both in the first set, to win the one-sided encounter in 45 minutes. Bhosale had made it to the quarter-finals of this event last year, but could not recreate that magic on Tuesday against an opponent who was on top of her game.
Another local girl, Ankita Raina’s campaign also ended on Tuesday, as top seed Nina Bratchikova defeated her 6-2, 6-3.
Mumbai girl Rashmi Teltumbde continued her dream run, by beating Dhruti Venugopal in straight sets. Teltumbde, who had made it to the main draw through qualifying rounds, won the first round match 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
