Hyderabad International Fashion Week 2012 (HIFW) may not be as big as the other fashion weeks that take place in Delhi, Mumbai or Goa, but it’s certainly a start for a city that is making its presence felt in the fashion arena. But what one couldn’t help noticing was that unlike other cities, Hyderabad’s A-listers and Tollywood celebrities failed to turn up for the event.
So, the pertinent question is, while Bipasha Basu and Paris Hilton make it to Goa Resort Fashion Week, when it comes to fashion shows in Hyderabad, how come no big names turn up for it frequently?
Lakshmi Manchu, Anjana Sukhani, Nitya Menon and Nitin Reddy were showstoppers on Day 1. Day 2 saw Zeenat Aman and Mahima Choudhary. While reports of Genelia and Ileana taking part has been doing the rounds, organisers state that the stars won’t be coming as Ileana is in Indore and Genelia is out of the country.
“The company doesn’t approach the stars, it’s the designers’ choice. While comparing to other fashion weeks, one needs to remember that those properties are 12 years old, while HIFW is just in its second year. Brand expansion won’t happen overnight and our focus for the time being is to increase designer showcasing and inviting multilingual stars,” says Gaurav Sharma, CEO of HIFW.
The fashion week opened with designer Krishna Mehta for whom Lakshmi Manchu walked the ramp. “I don’t choose people based on their stature, they should be strong women and have an amazing personality. That’s my reason for picking Lakshmi and the same reason applies to Zeenat Aman who has walked for me earlier too,” she points out.
Designer Ishita Singh, whose collection was showcased on Day 1, has worked with Genelia for close to eight years, but as showstoppers one saw Nitya Menon and Nitin Reddy instead. “I did approach Genelia, but the dates didn’t work out,” says the designer.
Commenting on why fashion shows in Hyderabad don’t see celebrities from Bollywood walking the ramp, she says, “In Mumbai, it’s very easy to network and get actors to walk the ramp, but it gets kind of difficult when you have to get them to travel out of the city.” As far as audience appreciation goes, her showstoppers got the maximum applause; people cheered, gave a standing ovation, and took lots of photographs.
The finale for the night was by Jyotsna Tiwari, whose favourite showstopper is Kangana Ranaut. “I am participating in HIFW for the first time and though I could have approached Kangana again, I chose not to. I wanted someone with a city connect and Anjana Sukhani seemed the right choice,” she says.
