A police station full of ducks, not criminals

DC | Amita Verma | 16th Dec 2012

Lucknow : Ever heard of people visiting a police station for something that is not even remotely related to crime.

Welcome to the Fakharpur police station in Bahraich district that is attracting hordes of visitors every day who drop in to see the scores of ducks who inhabit this police station.

Tall and stately ducks waddle around the police station without a care for the gun-totting ops that stand by on duty.

“A pair of ducks came here about ten years ago and the then station in charge tended to them. Thought the station in charge was transferred a few months later, the ducks stayed on and their family has grown and, today, there are over two dozens ducks who stay here,” says Avadh Narain Yadav, station in charge.

The duck family, according to Yadav, even joins the cops in the parade and also remains on duty with the men in khaki.

“Every policeman posted in this police station is friendly with the birds and we feed them food regularly and even provide a makeshift shelter during adverse weather condition.  The cops may come and go but the ducks are a permanent feature of this police station that stands on the UP-Nepal border,” he says. Besides, visitors who visit the Fakharpur police station to see the ducks also bring food for the birds. “This police station is gradually turning into a tourist spot and we are happy that people are coming here for the joy of seeing these birds,” says Avadh Narain Yadav.

The cops at this police station are also happy with the ducks. “They do the rounds with us, keep us entertained with their antics and even sit us with when we chat,” says one of the cops.

The cops recently dug out a pond in the premises of the police station and have put fish in it so that the ducks can enjoy their meal in the pond itself.
